Abstract
1381906 Thermic lances E BRANDENBERGER 28 Jan 1972 [5 Feb 1971] 4091/72 Heading F4T A method for manufacturing a thermic lance comprises the steps of introducing a plurality of metallic core-rods into a metallic tube having a circular cross-sectional shape, deforming the tube to a non-circular shape over the whole length thereof except at least at one of its end parts, the tube having means for connection to an oxygen supply at one end, forming in the vicinity of the oxygen connection means a longitudinally curved zone in the tube and in the core-rods, the non-circular shape and the longitudinally curved zone being formed in a single pressing operation. The non-circular shape of the tube may be elliptical, triangular, polygonal, or half-round. The thermic lance 1 produced by the method of the invention incorporates an iron enclosing-tube 2 containing iron core-rods 3. In use oxygen is passed along ducts 5 formed within the enclosing-tube. It is preferred that the ratio of the total metal area to the total duct area in a cross-section of the lance should be between 11 : 1 and 16 : 1. The enclosing-tube 2 is provided at each end with an external thread 4 so that two such enclosing- tubes may be joined by a coupling sleeve or so that the enclosing-tube 2 may be connected to an oxygen-supply hose. The longitudinally curved zone 6 is preferably offset by a distance h which is between <SP>1</SP>/ 6 and ¢ of the external diameter of the part of the enclosing-tube having a circular section.
