Abstract
1381666 Stabilized cuprous salt solutions AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY 21 March 1972 [2 April 1971(3) 28 April 1971 4 June 1971 14 Sept 1971 24 Sept 1971 20 Oct 1971 26 Oct 1971 14 Dec 1971 26 Jan 1972] 13127/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] Certain cuprous salt solutions arc stabilized in aqueous acid solutions by organic nitriles. These solutions contain at least 15% by volume of water, at least 4% of an organic nitrile, preferably acetonitrile. acrylonitrile, propionitrile, 2-hydroxycyanoethane or mixtures thereof, sulphuric, sulphurous or nitric acid and the corresponding copper salt. These solutions have particular utility in the purification or extraction of copper from copper-bearing materials (see Division C7). Methods of preparation. (a) Reduction of cupric salts with metallic copper in the presence of the nitrile and the acid. (b) Reduction of cupric salts with metals, e.g. Fe, Ag, Ni, Zn, Sn, Co or Cd) or with sulphur dioxide in the presence of the nitrile and the acid. (c) Oxidation of particulate copper with silver cations from a silver salt/nitrile/acid solution. (d) Dissolving cuprous oxide in acid/nitrile solutions. (e) Treating cupric oxide, carbonate or hydroxide with sulphur dioxide in nitrile/acid solutions. (f) By exchange of cupric and cuprous sulphides and differential precipitation. Thus, cuprous sulphide can be treated with cupric sulphate/nitrile/acid solution to provide cuprous sulphate solution which can be separated from precipitated cupric sulphide. However, the cupric sulphide may take part in a redox reaction under these conditions to produce sulphur and an increased concentration of cuprous ions. Overall, cuprous sulphide is therefore oxidized to cuprous sulphate and sulphur in the presence of the nitrile and the acid. (g) In a variation of method (a) less than stoichiometric amounts of cupric salt are used, but an excess of oxygen is maintained in the solution. The net result is effectively the reaction of copper with the acid in the presence of oxygen, the cupric salt acting as a catalyst. Uses. 1. Copper values can be leached as cuprous salt solutions from copper sulphide-bearing materials possibly using oxidizing conditions with less than stoichiometric amounts of cupric salt, as in (g) above. 2. Solutions containing both cuprous and stannous salts can be treated with cupric sulphate/acid/nitrile solution to produce insoluble stannic salts which are separated as solids from the solution.
