Abstract

138,089. Automatic Safety Tire Valve Corporation, (Assignees of Kahn, S.). Aug. 3, 1918, [Convention date]. Couplings, disconnectible; stuffing-box joints; with valves and cocks. - A connexion for tubes from compressed-air pumps or tanks to tyre nozzles is arranged so that the tyre is inflated to a predetermined pressure, and, in a modification, so that the coupling becomes disconnected on the attainment of such pressure. The first arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. The connexion to the tyre nozzle consists of a cylinder 46 surrounding the shank 37 which screws into the body 33. The shank 37 has a projecting flange 45, and a spring 48 is held between this and the upper flange 47 of the cylinder. A rubber thimble 49 is held in place by a cup 50. Above the cylinder is a cam-ring 52 fitting round the shank and having a handle 53. This ring has lifts 54, Fig. 4, which engage with lugs 55 on the body 33, and between the lifts depressions into which lugs 55 can project loosely. The cam-ring is turned into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 4 before the tyre nozzle is inserted, so as to compress the spring 48; but on its insertion, the ring is turned, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 4, releasing the spring, which expands the thimble 49 on to the nozzle. The whole connexion consists of a body 33 and head 24. The body contains a cavity 34 in which is a check valve 40 of which the stem fits loosely into the bore of the shank 37, and is unseated by the usual check-valve stem of the tyre nozzle. The head 24 contains a quill 12 round which is a spring 14 held between a blowoff valve 15 and pin 16, retained by an adjustable collar 19 graduated for pressures of 50 to 90 lb. Between the seating 17 of the valve and the portion of the head surrounding the jacket 23 is an annular chamber 31. The body and head are bored through at 44 to place this chamber in connexion with the bore of the shank 37. When the desired pressure in the tyre is attained, the valve 15 is unseated, and the hissing indicates this to the operator. In a modification, the spring 48 is adjusted for the required pressure and bears at one end against the flange 45, and at the other against a graduated nut screwing in the interior of the cylinder 46. On the attainment of the desired pressure, the device becomes disconnected. In a further modification shown in Fig. 7, the body 33' is elongated and takes the place of the shank. It contains a quill 12' surrounded by a spring 14<1> held at one end by a pin and graduated. collar as before and bearing at the other against a metal ring 63 supported on a washer 64. The packing 49a is surrounded by a metal thimble 49<b> having an inward flange 49<c> with notches 62. When the desired pressure is attained, washer 64 is lifted sufficiently to allow air to fill the entire space below the flange 45<a>, and so the spring 48 is compressed, as shown in the Figure, and the coupling released.
