Abstract

1380899 Display apparatus RANK ORGANISATION Ltd 22 Dec 1971 [24 Dec 1970] 61330/70 Heading G5C [Also in Division G2] A light transmitting unit comprises a block 10, one face 11 of which consists of a multiplicity of optic fibre ends 12a arranged in mutually spaced relation. From the opposite face of the block the fibres 12 are gathered together in a common ferrule 13 on the end of which light from a lamp 14 is focused by a mirror 15. Symbols may be constructed from groups of blocks 10, as in Fig. 2 (not shown). One method of manufacturing blocks 10 employs 20 spooled fibres 12 spaced 1 mm. apart which are interlaced by plastics strips for short portions 16 of their lengths, say 20mm., at intervals, say two feet, along the fibres 12. A portion 16 is placed on one end 17a of a belt 17 of felt which is at right angles to the fibres and impregnated with uncured epoxy resin, and the felt and fibres are then folded alternately over each other in such a way that portions 16 and felt 17 form a 30 layer sandwich. The loops 20, 21 are then cut, the resin cured, followed by cutting across the plane X-X, and the resulting faces 11 are ground and polished thus forming two units 10. Another method is to wind a continuous optical filament in a helix with resin impregnated spacers arranged at intervals around the periphery between successive layers in radial groups, In a further method a foaming agent, such as polyurethane foam, is applied to the fanned out ends of a bundle of fibres, which are then placed in an annular mould.
