Abstract

1380574 Structural members; suspended ceilings J H J PITT 10 March 1972 [10 March 1971] 6424/71 Headings E1K and E1W [Also in Division F2] A structural member for a suspended ceiling, of the kind formed from sheet metal and comprising a web 11, a flange 12 and preferable a reinforcing rail 10, has formations at each end of the web which are pressed out of the plane of the web to form the arrangement of tongues and recesses shown in Fig. 3, the tongues and recesses being oppositely directed at opposite ends of the web with respect to the plane of the web, so that a plurality of structural members may be engaged end to end with their webs in alignment and in interlocked relationship, the joints so formed being spaced longitudinally of the web from the positions of apertures intended for receiving the ends of cross-members of the ceiling structure. The arrangement is such that, when the web formations of adjacent structural members are interlocked, a latching edge surface 17 of each web formation is interengaged with a latching surface 22 of the other web formation to prevent withdrawal, and a tongue 15 of each web formation is received in the recess formed by pressed-out portion 20 of the other web formation, a bent-out tab 21 guiding the entry of tongue 15 into the recess. The latching surface 22 is provided on a pressed-out portion 18. A deformable section of each structural member, to resist buckling in the event of fire, consists of a cut away portion of the rail 10 and an associated aperture 30 having three notches 31.
