Abstract
1380490 Feeding sheets DIDDE-GLASER Inc 10 Oct 1972 [8 Nov 1971] 46620/72 Heading B8R Apparatus for separating sheets in turn from the top of a pile 14, Figs. 1 and 4, comprises a pick-up assembly 10 and a hold-down structure 30. The assembly 10 comprises a tubular vacuum manifold 12, attached to which by brackets 18 and spaced therealong are a plurality of sucker units 16. Each unit 16 comprises a vacuum tube 20 connected to the manifold by a hose 22, and a hollow cylinder 24 carrying a sucker head and slidably mounted on the tube 20, being urged downwards by a spring 26 into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 4. When the sucker head contacts a sheet, the vacuum force raises the cylinder to the broken line position shown in Fig. 4. The structure 30 comprises a plurality of fingers 32, each finger being aligned with a unit 16 in a plane perpendicular to the manifold 12. Each finger comprises a rigid core 34 and a projecting resilient plastic covering tube 37, and all the fingers are connected to a common bar 36 below and parallel to the manifold. The bar is secured in vertically adjustable relationship to the manifold by two brackets 38. Each bracket comprises members 40, 42 secured to the bar and each engaging one side of the manifold, the member 40 having a horizontal leg through which is threaded an adjusting screw 44 abutting the top of the manifold, the bar being urged away from the manifold by a spring 48, whereby the relative vertical position of the lower ends of the fingers 32 and cylinders 24 is adjustable according to the thickness and other characteristics of the sheets. In operation, the entire apparatus 10, 30 is lowered as a unit until the fingers and sucker heads engage the top of the pile, whereupon retraction of the cylinders 24 results in raising of a marginal edge of the top sheet 14a, the adjacent area of the sheet being held stationary by the fingers so that the sheet flexes about a line parallel to the manifold, and inadvertent separation of two sheets together is thereby discouraged. The apparatus is then raised as a whole to completely separate the top sheet from the pile.
