Abstract

1380432 Decorative bow MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 17 Dec 1971 [18 Dec 1970] 58842/71 Heading B6G A decorative ribbon material comprises as shown in Fig. 1, a plurality of interconnected pliable filaments 11 sparsely but regularly distributed so that a major portion of the ribbon material is comprised of open spaces and having a draw string 12 longitudinally centrally disposed on, and constrained by the web throughout its length, the lace-like web being variable compressible in a direction parallel to the drawstring such that the portion adjacent the drawstring is easier to compress than the edge portion of the ribbon, when the drawstring is pulled thereupon, and filaments adjacent and perpendicular to the drawstring being free to rotate about the drawstring when it is pulled. Preferably the drawstring is bonded to the ribbon material at the spaced points along its length. Alternatively the drawstring may be trapped between two layers of spun filamentary material. or may be woven into the filamentary material. The drawstring may comprise a nylon yarn loosely spirally wrapped with a cellulose acetate yarn, the drawstring being bonded to the lace-like web only at the points of intersection of the cellulose acetate yarn with the filaments of the lace-like web. Alternatively, the drawstring comprises a nylon yarn overlaid with at least one serpentine acetate filament, the drawstring being bonded to the lace-like web only at the points of intersection of the serpentine filament with the filaments of the lace-like web. A pre-bow is produced by firmly fixing at least one end of the drawstring to the lace-like ribbon material, e.g. by applying dots 15, 15A of hot-melt two dots 15A being spaced approximately one-half inch apart at any desired spaced intervals along the ribbon length. The pre-bows may be supplied as individual pre-bows in which case the ribbon material would be severed between spaced dots 15A. A decorative bow is formed from the prefabricated bow form by grasping one end of the bow form between the thumb and index finger of one hand with the free end of the bow form freely hanging downwardly, grasping the end of the drawstring adjacent the held end between the thumb and index finger of the other hand, pulling the drawstring upwardly until the other affixed end of the drawstring is in substantial juxtaposition with the thumb and index finger and securing the drawstring at the bottom of the formed bow. This can be done with a small square card (not shown), having a slit therein, the drawstring being wound about the card and inserted into the slit. The card may have a pressure sensitive adhesive coating on one side protected by a barrier material for attachment of the completed bow to a package. The drawstring may be rapidly pulled for approximately one-third of its length and gently pulled for its remaining length to form a partially open rose-bud bow. Alternatively, the drawstring may be rapidly pulled for its full extent thereby forming a ruffled or puff bow. Ribbon structures mentioned include (a) ribbons produced by weaving or knitting or by a combination of weaving and laminating or weaving and cutting, e.g. a strip of burlap with the linear threads removed in the central portion of the strip and left on the edges, a single linear thread being left in the middle to act as a drawstring; (b) laminated ribbons produced by adding the drawstring to a uniformly compressible ribbon structure and then laminating compression resistant strips to the edges.
