Abstract

1380422 Polythiolesters CIBA-GEIGY AG 29 March 1972 [19 April 1971] 9765/71 Heading C3R [Also in Division D1] Polythiol esters which also contain polyether units are obtainable from (a) a compound containing at least two carboxylic acid groups or at least one anhydride group, (b) a compound containing at least two alcoholic hydroxyl groups or at least one 1,2-epoxide group and optionally (c) a compound containing not more than one carboxylic acid group or alcoholic hydroxyl group, at least one of (a) and (b) and (c) if used having one or more mercaptan groups. The esters preferably have a molecular weight between 400 and 10,000 and may be prepared by heating the reactants together in the presence of a catalyst (such as a strong acid), and of an inert solvent, e.g. toluene, xylene, trichloroethylene or perchloroethylene and the water formed in the reaction may be removed as an azeotrope. Preferred acids are adipic, succinic and dimensed and trimerized C 18 unsaturated fatty acids. Preferred alcohols are polyoxypropylene diols, triols and tetrols. Preferred chain terminators are thioglycollic acid, 3-mercaptopriopionic acid, mercaptosuccinic acid, and 2-mercaptoethanol. The esters may be cured by heat (80-130‹ C.), or in the presence of a catalyst and preferably in a pH range of 7À5-12. Suitable catalysts include bases, e.g. sodium bicarbonate or monoethanolamine, sulphur compounds, e.g. sodium dibutyldithiocarbamate, free radical catalysts, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, salts and chelates of heavy metals with acids of pK below 5, e.g. copper sulphate, oxidizing agents, siccatives and sulphur. The ester may form part of a composition which further contains a protective colloid, e.g sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose or methoxyethyl cellulose, a methyl-vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer in the form of an alkali metal or ammonium salt, and a nonionic or anionic emulsifier The compositions may be formulated as aqueous emulsions or suspensions or solutions in organic solvents, e.g. alkanols, ketones, halogenated hydrocarbons an xylene, and may be used for treating synthetic textile fibres and fabrics to impart improved handle, antistatic, soil release and antisoil redeposition properties (see Divisions D1-D2)
