Abstract

1380168 Anchoring bolts J D CUMMING 17 Feb 1972 [25 Feb 1971] 7479/72 Heading F2H An expansion shell 12 for a rock bolt 11 comprises at least two opposed rock engaging members 16 to engage the walls of a bore 10, a wedge 15 lying between the members 16, and a plastics or thin metal container 25 containing a curable resin compound and secured to the end of the shell, the container having a frangible seal 27 and housing a frangible plastics or glass capsule 28 of a curative for the resin compound, such that on rotation of the bolt 11 the wedge is forced between the members 16 so that they grip the bolt wall and the frangible seal and capsule are broken, the resin compound and curative mixing and subsequently setting about the wedged anchorage adjacent sealing washer 33. As shown in Figs, 1 and 3 the wedge may have an internally threaded collar 23, to which the container 25 is secured by a bayonet or threaded joint, so that on a pull on head 20 the wedge is drawn axially to expand the members 16, then, on subsequent rotation of the head 20, bolt end 11a penetrates past the collar 23, breaks the seal 27 and the capsule 28 and finally, by abutting projections 31, forces the container from the collar, allowing release of the resin/curative mixture. Preferably, the mixing of the resin compound and the curative is an exothermic reaction so that air in spaces 34 and 35 is heated and expands, thereby forcing substantially the whole of the mixed contents from the container 25. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 8-12, not shown) the wedge (115) is directly connected with the outer wall of the container (125) and the rock engaging members (116) are adapted to engage the seal (127) so that as the wedge is drawn between the members (116) the seal (127) and the capsule (128) are broken.
