Abstract

1380088 Transistor pulse circuits; cathode-ray tube circuits PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 Jan 1972 [8 Jan 1971] 510/72 Headings H3T and H4T The storage screen-to-cathode voltage of a storage type cathode-ray display tube is provided by an emitter follower and an erasing voltage from a CR differentiating circuit fed with square wave source is added to the D.C. voltage, the circuit being arranged so that it can use a transistor having a peak voltage rating less than the peak screen-cathode voltage so generated. In Fig. 1, the square wave generated by switching over contact 12 is differentiated by a capacitor 16 and the associated resistance and the resulting pulses are applied to the base of the emitter follower supplying the screen-cathode voltage so as to superimpose positive and negative pulses thereon. Capacitor 17 connected in a circuit having the same time constant as the circuit of capacitor 16 maintains the collector voltage at a safe value. In Fig. 2 not shown), the differentiating capacitor is in series with the emitter follower, the supply to the latter being allowed to float and having a capacitor across it to maintain the voltage steady when the pulses are added. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the differentiating capacitor is connected to the emitter via a diode which isolates the transistor during the positive portion of the pulse, the transistor being driven to saturation during the negative portion so as to maintain the voltage thereacross low. A further diode and resistor (24, 25) are provided to equalize the charge and discharge time constants. In Fig. 4 (not shown), the capacitor is connected to the base and the collector-base p diode is protected by a Zener diode which conducts forwardly during the positive portion of the pulse and reversely during the negative portion. The tube is of a type having a glass screen coated by a thin conducting layer carrying a phosphor. The screen is sprayed with a uniform stream of electrons and a writing gun supplies relatively high velocity electrons which causes the screen, at the point of impact, to have a secondary emission factor greater than unity so that it acquires a positive charge.
