Abstract

1380032 Yarns E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 25 May 1973 [26 May 1972] 25135/73 Headings D1C and DIW [Also in Division F2] A mixed filament yarn comprises 50-80% by weight of (preferably bleached) polytetrafluoroethylene filaments and 50 - 20% by weight of aromatic polyamide e.g. poly (metaphenylene isophthalamide) filaments. The yarn may also comprise a coating, or successive coatings, of finely divided polytetrafluoroethylene particles and/or polyorganosiloxane. The yarn or a braid made therefrom may be used as packing material e.g. in a stuffing box, to reduce fluid leakage from around a rotating shaft. The respective filaments, preferably in the form of multifilament yarns, may be combined, as by plying and/or interlacing without twist: component yarns may differ as regards number of ends, filaments per end and denier.
