Abstract

1379984 Loud-speakers ELECTRONIC RESEARCH ASSOCIATES Inc 16 Feb 1972 [19 Aug 1971] 7185/72 Heading H4J A loud-speaker 4 is secured to the rear of a frame 2, and a decorative member 6 comprising stiff material and adapted to function as a sound propagating element extends across the opening 20 in the frame 2 in front of the loud-speaker 4. Yieldable material 34 is located between the frame 2 and the decorative member 6. Further yieldable material 36 is located between the decorative member 6 and the loud-speaker base 16. In addition, a yieldable element 38 may be located between the periphery of the decorative member 6 and inwardly facing surfaces 22 of the frame 2. The loud-speaker 4 has a flat diaphragm 10 carrying a voice coil (11), Fig. 3 (not shown) surrounded by a permanent magnet (13). Current is supplied to the voice coil (11) by conductors (15) embedded in or secured to the diaphragm 10. The frame 2 may be rectangular, oval or circular and the diaphragm 10 may be correspondingly shaped. A loud-speaker 4 having a circular shaped diaphragm may be mounted in a base 16 and frame 2 of rectangular or other shape. The decorative member 6 may be formed of or supported by an underlay of wood, metal or sheet material having a canvas painting, photograph or picture mounted on it. Alternatively the decorative member 6 is a mirror or a glass panel overlying and protecting a layer of acoustically transparent material, e.g. fabric or tapestry. The frame 2 is of wood or plastics material. The decorative member 6 may be inserted or removed without damage by disengaging fastening means 18 to permit removal of the base 16 of the loud-speaker.
