Abstract

1379926 Modifying polymers with perfluoroalkyl compounds CIBA-GEIGY AG 26 April 1972 [3 May 1971] 19415/72 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Division D1] A modified polymer comprises (A) a backbone polymer to which has been grafted (B) a compound of formula (R f -A) n -PG wherein R f is a perfluoroalkyl group of at least 3 carbon atoms, A is a linking group, n is 2 or 3 and PG is an ethylenically unsaturated group derived from fumaric, maleic, citraconic, mesaconic, itaconic, trans-aconitic, cis-aconitic or methylene malonic acid. The backbone polymer and fluorine-containing compound are mixed together, optionally in the presence of a free radical catalyst, and heated to yield the modified polymer. Examples are given in which (a) a bis- [1,1,2,2-tetrahydro (mixed C 6 F 13 , C 8 F 17 , C 10 F 21 and C 12 F 25 )] fumarate is grafted on to polyethylene and the resulting product is blended with polyethylene, or dissolved in mineral spirits to which 1,1,1-trichloroethane is added and applied to cotton, or the said fumarate is grafted on to ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, ethylene-propylene-butadiene terpolymer, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, ABS copolymer rubber, butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber, poly-(ethylene terephthalate), poly- (hexamethylene adipamide), poly-(bisphenol A- phosgene) reaction product or polyvinyl alcohol; and (b) polyethylene is grafted with a fumarate as in (a), or with [CHCOOCH 2 C 7 F 15 ] 2 trans,
