Abstract

1365329 Glass fibre/styrene-unsaturated anhydride resin compositions SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 29 Dec 1971 [29 Dec 1970] 60555/71 Headings C3P and C3G A glass fibre reinforced styrene resin composition comprises from 95-40 wt. per cent of a styrene resin containing anhydride groups derived from an alpha, beta ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid anhydride or from 95-40 wt. per cent of a blend of such a polymer with less than 75 wt. per cent of an anhydride group free styrene resin (based on the blend), and from 5-60 wt. per cent of glass fibres. The anhydride group containing resin may be a copolymer of styrene with the anhydride, or a styrene resin onto which the anhydride has been grafted. The amount of anhydride incorporated into the resin is preferably 0À5 to 20 wt. per cent. and specified anhydrides are those of maleic, itaconic and citraconic acids. The other monomer(s) of the resin may be styrene, styrene and acrylonitrile, or styrene, acrylonitrile and butadiene. Preferably at least some of the glass fibres are long fibres, or fibres having a coating thereon of a silane and a film former such as polyvinyl acetate, a polyester, an ethylene/ acrylamide copolymer or an epoxy resin. In the examples styrene / acrylonitrile / maleic anhydride, and styrene/acrylonitrile/maleic anhydride/polybutadiene copolymers are used. They are prepared by an initial partial bulk polymerization followed by a final suspension process. The description refers to preparing graft polymers by adding an organic peroxide to the fine powdered resin or a solution of the resin, in the presence of the unsaturated anhydride.
