Abstract
1379764 Card reader NETHERLANDS CENTRAL ORGANISATION FOR APPLIED SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH 2 Dec 1971 [3 Dec 1970] 56030/71 Heading G4M A card reader has a card carrying embossed lines, varying in number to identify the card, carried on a drum 2 past a focused line of light at A, fed from laser source 6 via prism 8 and lens 9. The light beam is arranged at an angle α # 40 degrees to the card normal and is reflected to a detector 11 at an angle # # 35 degrees to the card normal. The detector feeds an electric signal to a circuit 14 (Fig. 2, not shown) containing a threshold circuit, providing a zero output at the minimum value of reflected light, a potentiometer feeding a scale 18, a high band-pass filter and smoothing circuit forming a D.C. value equal to the average value of the detected signals, and a discriminator comparing the outputs of the filter and the smoothing circuit and feeding pulses representing the embossed lines to a counter via a filter. When the counter reaches a required value those cards having lines equal to or greater in number than that value are separated from the other cards.
