Abstract

1379763 Granulating apparatus SOC ANON CROS 22 Nov 1971 [20 Nov 1970] 30831/74 Divided out of 1379761 Heading B5A [Also in Division B1] Apparatus for reacting liquid phase reactants on a moving bed of solid particles comprises (1) a tubular reaction vessel mounted for rotation about a longitudinal axis such that solid particles introduced near one end of the vessel will move through the vessel as it rotates; (2) a coulter or blade within the vessel and extending adjacent the inner tubular surface; (3) a conduit for introducing a first fluid into the vessel, the conduit being fixed rigidly to the coulter or blade and having an outlet adjacent thereto; (4) means for introducing a second fluid into the vessel. In operation, the coulter or blade maintains a groove or furrow in the moving particle bed as the vessel rotates, the first fluid issuing into the groove or furrow, which thus serves to prevent the conduit outlet from becoming blocked. The means for introducing the second fluid may also be a conduit fixed to the coulter or blade, or, e.g. spray means over the particle bed. More than one coulter or blade, with its associated conduit, may be present. Fig. 2 shows a rotary cylinder 2 in which fluid distributers 15, 17 are connected by flexible tubes 16, 18 to metal conduits 13, 14, welded on to coulter 12, the conduits being welded on the side opposite that where the solid particles strike the coulter. A fluid spray 19 is provided. The apparatus may be used in the reaction of H 2 SO 4 and NH 3 , or of H 3 PO 4 and NH 3 on moving beds of ammonium sulphate and ammonium phosphate respectively (see Specifications 1,379,762 and 1,379,761), and performs the functions of mixer, neutralizer, granulator and drier. A continuous process for making ammonium phosphate fertilizer is described.
