Abstract

1379735 Stud and socket fastenings NEWEY GOODMAN Ltd 1 Aug 1972 [27 Aug 1971] 40259/71 Heading E2B A press fastener comprises a stud element 1 having a bifurcated head 5 the two portions of which are capable of being urged resiliently towards one another, and a socket element 2 in the socket of which the head releasably engages, the socket having a restriction 18 through and behind which the head respectively has to be passed and engaged to retain the two elements together and ' which urges the portions of the head towards one another as the head passes through it. The cross-sectional shape of the socket at the restriction and the outline shape of the cross-section of the head at least at those parts of the two head portions which bear on the periphery of the restriction as the head passes through the restriction are dissimilar, the shape of one being circular and the other being oblong with a major axis dimension greater than the diameter of the circular shape. As shown, the stud and socket of metal or moulded plastics, are each secured to a support 29 of cloth by attachment plates 3 having pointed rivets 27 which are pushed through the cloth into holes 12 or 22 in the stud or socket and headed to be expanded into the enlarged ends of the holes. The head 5 of the stud is oval or diamond shape in cross-section and tapers towards the crown 6 thereof, and is bifurcated by a slot 10 which may extend into a circular stem 7; an annular groove 11 is formed in the base 9 and depressions 25 in the plates 3 receive material of the supports 29. The socket includes a circular aperture 16 provided with a mouth 17 tapering to a restriction 18. In an alternative embodiment, the head 5 is circular in cross-section and the aperture 16 is oval; the stud and socket may be sewn or welded or fused in position and an annular groove may be formed in the face 15 of the socket 2 and around the aperture 16 to define a central tubular portion containing the mouth 17 and neck 18.
