Abstract

1379487 Projectile fuzes PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 Jan 1972 [2 Feb 1971] 4122/72 Heading F3A An electrical proximity and impact fuze for a projectile comprises an envelope 1, Fig. 1, rotatable from a safe position, in which the fuze cannot be charged up, to various positions corresponding to different proximity functions and/or impact actions. Selection is made possible by a plate 21 which rotates with the envelope 1 to bring selected contacts 22, 23, 23<SP>1</SP>, 25, 26, 27, 28, Fig. 4, into engagement with fixed contacts 24 and 29. The impact fuze 30 comprises separately chargeable condensors 37 and 38 which are arranged to discharge through a firing device 32 following actuation of a less, or more sensitive, impact contact 35 or 36. The contacts include a part which is thrown forward on impact. The proximity fuze 31 depends upon a Doppler signal generated by transmitted H.F. curves reflected back from the target. A thyristor is activated by the signal and causes a condensor 45 to discharge through igniter 32. A voltage divider 42, set in accordance with the angular position of the envelope 1, determines the strength of the Doppler signal required to activate the thyristor. The envelope 1, Fig. 1, rotates in a step-wise manner by virtue of projections 16 engaging underlying recesses. An 0-ring 11, compressed between surfaces 12 and 13 by a spring 5, hermetically seals the envelope, but is unloaded when the envelope is rotated. Upon firing a projectile fitted with the fuze, the envelope 1 is automatically locked in its selected position by a pin 18 Fig. 6 which sets back into a recess 59 and is held therein by an element 55 which moves, under the action of centrifugal force, to the position shown in broken lines.
