Abstract

1379131 Flights for darts and arrows UNICORN PRODUCTS Ltd 10 April 1973 [11 Aug 1972] 37585/72 Heading A6S A dart or arrowflight has a stem 1 with integral, radially extending ribs 8 each having side faces 9 that are flat, parallel to each other and parallel to a radius through the main axis of the stem, at least one of the side faces 9 of each rib acting as an alignment face for an associated radial flight wing 17 secured to the stem. The dart shown preferably has the portions 2, 3 and 4 of the stem formed integrally, e.g. of plastics, metal or wood, or, e.g., the portions 2, 3 may be friction or screw coupled together. The end 4 of the stem is of frusto-conical shape, to deflect darts from behind. The wings 17 may be feathers, or made of plastics, &c, and secured to the stem 1 by adhesive or retained by friction; if both stem and wings are of plastics, they may be chemically or heat welded in place. As shown, the stem surface 11 between each rib 8 is flat; in one modification, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), it is arcuate, and in another (not illustrated), it is V-shaped. The grooves 10 formed between the ribs 8 may be regular in cross-section, or shaped by corrugations, &c to mate with correspondingly shaped edges on the flight wings 17. The symmetrical T-shape of the flight wings 17 illustrated may instead be somewhat L- shaped. As shown, surfaces 12, 13 at the ends of the grooves 10 protect the securing edges of the flight wings; in an alternative form, the frusto-conical surface 5 of the stem portion 2 tapers down into the grooves. In a modified form, the stem 1 has four pairs of ribs 8, each pair being separated by a narrow slot to receive a wing of polyester sheet material, &c. The wings 17, instead of extending the whole distance between the surfaces 12, 13, may instead stop short of the groove ends. The securing thread 6 shown on the stem portion 2 may have a longitudinal groove or be replaced by a cruciform, &c slot to receive a cane bearing the dart needle 16. When used for air arrow; the stem 1 may constitute the whole or a part of the arrow shaft, and the end 4 be shaped to form the usual nock.
