Abstract

1378752 Cladding girders SIKA CONTRACTS Ltd 31 Dec 1971 [8 April 1971 4 Aug 1971] 9070/71 and 36561/71 Heading E1K A girder is coated with a settable material, e.g. with mortar, to a predetermined depth by arranging guide member adjacent to but spaced from the girder, applying the settable material so as to cover the guide members and to extend beyond the eventual outer surface of the settable material and striking off excess material by drawing an edge of a tool along an adjacent pair of guide members, whereby the tool determines the form of the outer surface of the settable material. As shown in Fig. 3 of Provisional Specification 9070/71, four wires 12 are stretched adjacent the edges of an I-beam 10 which is then coated with mortar 14 until the wires are just buried. Optionally the wires are tied together to preserve the desired spacing. Excess mortar is struck off by moving a tool straight edge along the wires to produce the structure shown, from which the wires may be removed before the mortar sets. In another embodiment in which the guide members remain buried in the product, Fig. 2 of Provisional Specification 36561/71, brackets 110 are secured at intervals along the edges of a girder 112, each bracket including a fin 122 and a guide member in the form of a folded strip 114, preferably of metal plastering corner bead, is attached to the fins along each girder edge. Brackets of different sizes may be used on the same girder to provide for mortar layers varying in thickness. In a further modification, Fig. 3 of Provisional Specification 36561/71 not shown, the fins 122 are shorter and are connected by non- ferrous guide member strips which are similar or identical to the coating material and may incorporate reinforcing elements such as glass fibre or steel wire or mesh.
