Abstract

1339082 Making doctor blades WIGGINS TEAPE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 14 Feb 1972 [23 Feb 1971] 5152/71 Heading B3A [Also in Division D1] A doctor blade having alternate areas of metal and hardened adhesive along its working edge for use in coating webs e.g. of paper (see Division D1) is made by a method which comprises winding metal wire round a polygonal cross-sectioned former, applying a coating of an adhesive to the wire to fill the spaces between adjacent turns of the wire round the former, removing the former when the adhesive is set and cutting the wire/adhesive tube thus formed longitudinally to form a plurality of strips having a required width suitable for use as a blade. The steps of curting and removing the tube from the former may be carried out simultaneously e.g. by milling the tube along corner edges of the former. The blade may also be made by securing a plurality of metal strips or wires in spaced apart relationship with a resin adhesive and working the resulting structure to form a blade of the required size.
