Abstract

1378485 Surface fluorination of rubber articles Z M NUDELMAN and I P PROKUDIN 1 June 1973 26291/73 Headings C3E and C3P A rubber article is subjected to surface fluorination by treating the article with a gas containing evaporated antimony pentafluoride and a carrier gas inert under the treating conditions and wasting the thus treated rubber article with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal carbonate. The treating gas may be generated by bubbling a carrier gas, e.g. air or nitrogen through liquid antimony pentafluoride, or by continuously evaporating a stream of liquid antimony pentafluoride introduced into a current of the carrier gas. Examples are given in which sealing cups and plates of butadieneacrylonitrile rubber, ethylene propylene rubber, chloroprene rubber, natural rubber of vinylidene fluoride-trifluorochloroethylene copolymer are fluorinated and then washed in aqueous sodium carbonate.
