Abstract

1378468 Grinding lenses J H SMITH 4 Sept 1973 41480/73 Heading B3D [Also in Division G2] A method of manufacturing contact lenses comprises mounting a semi-finished lens or blank 10 having a desired base curve 12 for axial rotation, forming its concave side with a plurality of peripheral surfaces of curves 27, 29, 30 having slightly different radii of curvature, each being greater than that of the base curve, holding the lens against rotation, and presenting juncture line removal tools having radii of curvature each between that of an adjacent pair of peripheral curves to effect removal of juncture lines 50, 51, 52. The semi-finished lens may have its convex side 13 finished and has its concave side formed to a desired base curve 12 of radius R1. The lens is initially secured by adhesive 24 to a holder 23 on a freely rotatable shaft 22 arranged at an angle to a rotatable shaft 16 carrying a grinding tool 15 which may be spherical and has a radius R4 greater than R1 and forms a peripheral curve 27 on the lens. Thereafter the procedure is repeated using a grinding tool having a radius R3 between R1 and R4 for forming the peripheral curve 29, and this procedure is again repeated using a tool having a radius R2 between R1 and R3 for grinding the peripheral or annular curve 30. The curves 27, 29, 30 are then polished by tools 35, Fig. 3, having radii which are equal to or slightly less than the radii R2, R3, R4, the lens again being mounted on a holder 23 carried by a freely rotatable shaft. Finally, the lens is secured by adhesive (44, Fig. 4, not shown), to a holder (43) on a non-rotatable shaft (42) and is presented to successive polishing tools (45) for removing the juncture lines 50, 51, 52, the tools having radii between R1 and R2, R2 and R3, and R3 and R4, respectively.
