Abstract

1378153 Minimising underground fires BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD 6 June 1972 [9 June 1971] 19727/71 Heading A5A [Also in Division E1] An underground barrier wall for preventing the spread of fire is produced by excavating a trench which is filled as it is formed with a clay slurry, one or both trench walls being lined with a sheet of synthetic plastics or metal foil, or asbestos board. The trench may be subsequently filled or partly-filled with concrete, or grout containing, e.g. finely-divided silica, powdered limestone and/or a flocculating agent. The trench may be enlarged at its base by vibration.
