1377765 Biological purifying process PERMUTIT CO Ltd 20 Nov 1972 [19 Nov 1971] 53910/71 Heading C1C In a process for reducing the B.O.D. of a liquid, partially digested liquid is withdrawn from the aerobic digestion zone of an open (or enclosed) vessel 1 and returned thereto as streams from jets 10 of distributer 9, the streams penetrating substantially the entire depth of the aerobic digestion zone of the vessel 1 and causing aeration of the liquid. The liquid in the vessel 1 is maintained under an oxygen-containing atmosphere. The jets may be positioned at, or up to 25 cms. above, the liquid level. The liquid to be treated may be treated in a trickling filter and then passed into vessel 1 through line 5 (as shown) or, in other embodiments, through distributer 9 or another distributer (not shown). Oxygen may be added to the withdrawn liquid prior to it issuing from the jets. The vessel 1 may have a sedimentation zone below the aeration zone.
