Abstract

1377618 Microbiological testing MILES LABORATORIES Inc 19 Nov 1971 [27 Nov 1970] 53873/71 Heading C6F A composition comprises a predetermined number, between 5 and 100, of colony producing micro-organisms, and sufficient of a microbiologically inert, colloidal suspending agent to suspend said micro-organisms. The composition may also comprise glucose and peptone, and the suspending agent may be a water soluble alginate, gelatine, a natural gum, colloidal silica, a cellulose gum, an acid polysaccharide, or a seaweed polysaccharide. It may be in the form of an aqueous suspension of the micro-organism, containing 0À1-1À0% w/w of suspending agent, or in the form of a solid resulting from evaporation of such a solution, which may be deposited in a microporous membrane through which the microorganisms will not pass. The membrane may be rendered hydrophilic by treatment with a surface attive agent and its edge portion may be rendered hydrophobic. The membrane, when employed may be in the form of a disc and may have a handle affixed thereto.
