Abstract

1377504 Disproportionating chlorosilanes UNION CARBIDE CORP 16 Dec 1971 [17 Dec 1970 14 June 1971] 58472/71 Heading C1A Chlorosilanes are disproportionated by contacting them with an ion exchange resin containing tertiary amino, or quaternary ammonium groups. The temperature used may be between 0‹ and 300‹ C., and the pressure used may be super-atmospheric, atmospheric, or subatmospheric. The resin used may be a macroreticular resin, i.e. a resin possessing a non- collapsed non-gel pore structure of increased porosity. The resin preferably contains diethylamino groups bonded therein. The chlorosilanes used may be trichlorosilane, dichlorosilane, and monochlorosilane. The resin may be used as a fixed bed and the mixtures produced by disproportionation which include H 2 SiCl 2 , SiCl 4 , HSiCl 3 , SiH 4 , and ClSiH 3 , may be separated, the appropriate reagent recycled back to the ion-exchange material for further processing and the remainder separated, e.g. by distillation. The process may be performed in a continuous manner.
