Abstract
1377501 Treating exhaust gas GILBERT SHAW Ltd 31 Dec 1971 [9 Jan 1971 23 Sept 1971] 1143/71 and 44366/71 Heading F1B A process of removing water of combustion and pollutants from the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine comprises passing exhaust gases from the engine to a heat exchanger, utilizing ambient air at said heat exchanger to cool the exhaust gases by convection alone below their dew point to produce condensed water of combustion, and separating the condensed water together with pollutants dispersed therein as an unseparated mixture from the residual exhaust gases. An apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a number of hollow plates 1, 1a, 1b, 1c and 1d, each plate consisting of two 24 gauge stainless steel sheets welded together at their edges and along the lines 3 and also dimpled and spot welded at the points 4. Exhaust gas enters at 5, follows a serpentine path through the plate, and then enters the next plate, so that as seen in Fig. 2, the gas follows a zig-zag course from one plate to the next. Emerging from plate 1d at 20 the gas passes through a woven wire mesh entrainment separator 21 into tail-pipe 23. The plates are stated to be each 42 ins by 28 ins. Condensate falls into a receptacle 19 from which it is withdrawn via a drain cock 25. Cooling air is directed between the plates by scoops mounted on the vehicle in which the heat exchanger is fitted. Fan assistance may also be provided. The plates are ¢ in - 1À0 inch apart. The receptacle 19 is of double-walled construction to conserve heat so that the liquid does not freeze. The residual gases are re-heated before discharge to atmosphere by passing them through a double-walled pipe in which they receive heat from the uncooled exhaust gases. In a modification the plates are connected in parallel instead of in series.
