Abstract

1377446 Wells &c HYDRIL CO 19 Feb 1972 7767/72 Heading E1F [Also in Division F2] A safety valve comprises a housing 12, 13, 14, a ball valve B in the bore of the housing, ball valve actuator means in the housing, and releasable locking means for locking the ball valve in the open position. The actuator means comprises sleeves 30, 75 and pivot means 80. The locking means comprises piston 48, split ring 53 engageable with a recess 56 in the housing, a spring urged sleeve 54 and ring 58 cooperating with shoulder 59 on the sleeve 30. Normally a spring 77 urges the sleeve 75 to hold the ball valve in the closed position with its passage 96 transverse to the bore of the housing (as shown). When inserted in well tubing the safety valve is opened by supplying fluid to a pipe 27 to move the sleeve 30 downwardly, the movement moving the ball valve, and the sleeve 75 downwardly compressing the spring 77 and rotating the ball valve to the open position where the passage is in alignment with the bore of the housing. To lock the valve in open position a bridge plug is interposed between the ports 47, 98 (Fig. 1B) and fluid at pressure supplied to the upper part of the tubing moves the piston downwardly, displaces the ring 53 into the recess, the piston holding down the sleeve 54 and ring 58 to prevent movement of the sleeve 30. The valve is unlocked by placing a cross-over plug over the ports so that fluid at pressure in the upper part of the tubing is directed through the ports 98 to move the piston upwardly permitting the ring 53 to contract and free the sleeve 54, the ring 58 and the sleeve 30. To facilitate assembly of the safety valve four longitudinal grooves are cut into the threads 19 to allow passage of the ball valve into the housing. In a modification the ball valve has the pivot pins and the means 80 the slots.
