1377340 Anthanthrones N S DOKUNIKHIN G N VOROZHTSOV and VP SARYCHEVA 3 May 1973 21009/73 Heading C2C The invention comprises 3,4,9,10-anthanthrone-tetracarboxylic acid and the dianhydride thereof. The tetracarboxylic acid may be prepared by oxidizing a compound of the formula where X is COOH, or COCH 3 , followed by cyclization of the resultant 1,1<SP>1</SP>-dinaphthyl- 4,4<SP>1</SP>,5,5<SP>1</SP>,8,8<SP>1</SP>-hexacarboxylic acid or its anhydride by the action of acid condensing agents. The dianhydride may be prepared by heating the tetracarboxylic acid.
