Abstract

1377213 2,2<SP>1</SP>-Bipyridyls IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 May 1972 [3 May 1971] 12740/71 Heading C2C 2,21-Bipyridyl or dialkyl 2,2<SP>1</SP>-bipyridyls are prepared by heating pyridine or an alkyl pyridine at a temperature between 250‹ and 500‹ C. and a pressure above 200 p.s.i.g. in the presence of one or more oxides of elements from Groups Ib, IIa, IIb, IIIa, IIIb, IVa, IVb, Va, Vb, VIa, VIIa and VIIIa of the Periodic Table. The preferred oxides are those of copper, titanium and tungsten. The oxides may also be used in the form of metal oxy-anion salts, e.g. bismuth phosphomolybdate, cobalt aluminate, manganese chromate and nickel molybdate. Suitable starting materials are, in particular, pyridine and 2-, 3- and 4-methyl pyridines.
