1377130 Shaft couplings; bearings JEAN WALTERSCHEID KG 30 March 1972 [5 April 1971 24 Dec 1971] 15108/72 Headings F2U and F2A In a telescopic shaft coupling, for a univer- sally-jointed propeller shaft wherein a polygonal, e.g. square-sectioned inner shaft 1 drivingly engages an axially grooved cylindrical outer shaft 2 through axial rows of balls 30, one row loaded, the other unloaded on each side of the inner square, the balls are carried on the inner shaft 1 in a tubular holder 3, of corresponding cross-section, having axial slots 10 &c. of less width than the ball diameter, and provided at each end with a U-shaped return tunnel 5, 6, with an inclined base ramp to raise the balls from the inner shaft at the tunnel mouths. Ball track grooves may be provided on the inner shaft 1 as well as in the outer 2. The U-shaped tunnels 5, 6 are formed separately for each shaft face and are butted together at adjacent corner lugs (24, 25, Fig. 6, not shown) and retained in enlarged chambers in the outer shaft 2. End flanges on the outer shaft retain the ball holder 3.
