Abstract

1376893 Converging and handling loads T J STACEY J E R WEBB and R T HUTTON 1 Nov 1971 [16 Nov 1970] 54484/70 Headings B8A and B8E In load handling apparatus, the floor of a container, lorry, van, ship, aircraft or warehouse consists of a fixed plate 1 having perforations 2 through which may project ball bearings 5 mounted in a vertically movable plate 3. This plate is mounted on hydraulic jacks 8 actuated from a system 9-13. With the plate 3 raised a load is manoeuverable on the bearings 5 but when the plate 3 is lowered by releasing pressure through valve 13, the load is deposited on the fixed plate 1. In a further construction, Fig. 5, a frame 20 which may form part of the floor of a vehicle is divided into two sections 22, 23 of which top flanges 25 form a fixed support. Within each section 22, 23 is a vertically movable plate assembly consisting of ball bearings 28 located between a fibre-glass plate 26 and an aluminium plate 29, Fig. 6. To assist guidance of the plate assembly during raising and lowering, pillars 33 pass through holes in the plate 26. The apparatus may be mounted on a trolley or on a turntable and the ball bearings, which may be resiliently mounted, may be replaced by rollers or castors. An endless belt may be supported on the rollers. The plate 29 may be dispensed with or replaced by a rubber sheet. The jacks may be pneumatic or may be replaced by mechanical, electrical or electromechanical means.
