Abstract
1376851 Securing nuts SIMMONDS SA 13 Feb 1973 [23 March 1972] 6993/73 Heading B3U [Also in Division F2] A method of locking a nut 1 having a frustoconical or bulged upper face 2 on to a threaded member comprises deforming the nut by applying to its face 2 in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of the nut a tool having three punches 4 symmetrically disposed about the nut axis and each of which has an end surface for striking the nut, each end surface being a portion of a surface of revolution containing the end surfaces of the other two punches, the surface of revolution including at least one frusto-conical portion facing downwardly and inwardly towards the upper face of the nut, so as to form three equidistant imprints 3 each having in plan the general shape of a crescent formed between two arcs 5, 6, of two substantially concentric circles, the inner arc 5 being subtended at its centre by an angle smaller than that of the outer arc 6 at its centre. The punch 4 preferably includes two frusto-conical portions on the surface of revolution, which form imprint portions 3a, 3b, the portions 3a have an included angle of 140 degrees, while the included angle of the frusto-conical nut face is 120 degrees, and the nut is deformed radially and axially by a decreasing amount from the tool engaging surface.
