Abstract

1376732 Reciprocating pumps JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 12 April 1972 [16 April 1971] 9629/71 Heading F1A [Also in Division G3] In a radial cylinder pump comprising a rotary cylinder block 12, Fig.1, on a stationary pintle valve 11 and pistons 14 engaging a cam-ring 19 through slippers 20, the eccentricity of the camring is controlled in accordance with the delivery pressure by a piston 22 continuously subjected to delivery pressure, and a larger diameter piston 24 biased by a spring 25 and subjected to a control pressure from a valve 27, Fig.6, controlled by the delivery pressure. In operation, spring 25 initially biases cam-ring 19 to its maximum stroke position, and a spring 29 biases valve 27 to connect piston 24 to delivery pressure. When the delivery pressure exceeds a predetermined value, valve member 28 is moved against spring 29 and connects piston 24 to low pressure via valve bore 31, delivery pressure acting on piston 22 then reducing the cam-ring eccentricity. If the delivery pressure increases sufficiently to move the relieved portions of valve member 28 clear of shoulder 33, some of the pump delivery is discharged through the relieved portions to low pressure. The cylinder block 12 and drive-shaft 36 have respective pairs of projections (34), (37), Fig.2 (not shown) engaging a coupling member 35. The shaft seal assembly comprises annular members 42, 44 located by half-washers (39), (40) Fig.3 (not shown) and biased apart by a spring 46, and engaging sealing rings 47 and carbon face seals 48, 49. Leakage entering chamber 50 is drained through passage 51.
