1376711 Polyester coating compositions CASSELLA FARBWERKE MAINKUR AG 25 Feb 1972 [25 Feb 1971] 8823/72 Heading C3R A coating composition consists of (1) 60-5% by weight of a cross-linking agent which is a polymer, oligomer or monomer which contains N-methylol groups which are at least partially etherified, C-methylol groups, partially etherified C-methylol groups, epoxy groups or isocyanate groups; (2) 40-95% by weight of a saturated polyester having a molecular weight of from 1000 to 5000, a hydroxyl number of 50 to 300 and an acid number of 0À1 to 10 which is the esterification product of (A) 1-50 mol. per cent of a saturated aliphatic polyol containing up to 6 carbon atoms and having at least 3 primary and/or secondary hydroxyl groups; (B) 99-50 mol. per cent of a mixture of (a) 71-95 mol. per cent of a straight chain saturated aliphatic diol having up to 8 carbon atoms and containing primary and/or secondary hydroxyl groups separated from each other by a chain of at least 4 carbon atoms which is not interrupted by other atoms, and (b) 29-5 mol. per cent of a saturated aliphatic diol having from 3 to 6 carbon atoms and containing primary and/or secondary hydroxyl groups which are separated from each other by less than 4 carbon atoms; and (c) 5-50 mol. per cent of a saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid containing 4 to 10 carbon atoms and 95-50 mol. per cent of a mixture consisting of 100-5 mol. per cent of isophthalic acid and 0-95 mol. per cent of terephthalic acid. The examples describe preparing the above polyesters from trimethylolethane or propane, 1,6-hexanediol or 1,4-butanediol, 1,2- or 1,3-propanediol or 1,2-butanediol, adipic acid, and isophthalic and terephthalic acids, and forming the coating compositions by mixing the polyesters with an etherified methylolmelamine resin in ethanol or isobutanol, pentamethoxymethylmelamine, a phenol resin, a mixture of an epoxy resin and a butylated melamine formaldehyde resin or an adduct of toluylene diisocyanate and trimethylolpropane.
