Abstract

1376525 Extruding cable sheath; laminated cable WALPRO PLASTICS NV 27 July 1972 [13 Aug 1971] 35171/72 Headings B5A and B5N [Also in Division H1] A flat cable, of flexible insulating material 2, which contains copper conductors 7 inserted into grooves 3, each of which has an intermediate portion which is narrower than the bottom part thereof, the open surface of the cable being covered by a transparent strip of plastics material 12, is manufactured as follows. The tape 2 with grooves 3 is extruded from apparatus 1, passes into cooling chamber 4 in which it is gauged, and then into apparatus which consists of parts 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 13, 14, 15. The tape 2 passes around unit 6 such that its grooves face outward (achieved by reversing unit 5) and receive therein copper conductors 7 by means of tensioning elements (19), (17), (Fig. 2, not shown). The tape 2 is drawn through the device 8 and the outwardly diverging edges 10 (Fig. 8a) of the grooves 3 receive a colour marking at 9. A transparent plastic strip 12 is extruded over the tape (see Fig. 8b) at 17 and is attached thereto, and the tape is then passed through a tensioning device 13, cutting device 14 and finally on to a spool 15. The tape is maintained in slight tension at devices 8 and 11 by means of inter-connected pressure rollers (24), (28) and pneumatic actuators (26), (30) respectively (see Figs. 5 and 6, not shown).
