Abstract

1376300 Flexible glass fibre optical conduits AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP 14 Dec 1971 [14 Dec 1970] 58132/71 Heading C1M [Also in Division G2] A flexible bundle of light conducting glass fibres 10, each consisting of a core 16 and covering 18 of glass of tower refractive index, is formed by giving each fibre an over-cladding 20 of selectively removable material forming multifibres 28 from the fibres 10, the cladding 20 rendering them coherent, making a bundle 42 of a plurality of multifibres 28 with the ends coherent and selectively removing the overcladding 20 in a region of the bundle 42 intermediate the coherent ends. The selectively removable material may be a glass such as a silica-free soluble glass or a metal, such as aluminium, which can be leached by hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide, respectively. Preferably the multifibres 28 are wound on a drum and the tightly packed multifibres cemented or fused together over a short portion which is then cut through centrally to form the two coherent ends of the bundle 42. Coverings 44, (46) of plastic, wax or other materials resistant to acid may be applied over the ends of the bundle 42 by painting, dipping or taping to preserve the ends coherent when the whole bundle is immersed in a bath of leaching solution. The bath or bundle or both may be vibrated to assist leaching of the overcladdings 20. The coverings 44, 46 may then be removed. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,337,230.
