Abstract

1376143 Growing plants J BLACKBURN 19 Jan 1973 [26 Oct 1971 16 May 1972] 49607/71 and 23000'72 Heading A1E [Also in Division El] In a method of forming a self-draining tarmacadam surface a layer 11 of tarmacadam on a substrate 10 is pierced, before setting, to at least half its depth to provide a pattern of drainage holes which may or may not reach the substrate, at least some of the holes being then filled with loose gravel &c or with soil 17 for grass tufts 18. The substrate 10 may comprise earth but as shown comprises a layer of stone chips on a concrete foundation layer to provide a flat drain of hardcore. The tarmacadam is laid in one or more layers and is pierced by a plate provided with a pattern of solid or hollow conical or rectangular spikes. The spiked plate, Fig. 3 (not shown), may be of metal or plastics and may be pressed into the tarmacadam by a roller or by rams on an undisclosed machine, the spiked plate (12) being associated if necessary with a correspondingly apertured stripping plate (14) which is held against the tarmacadam while the spiked plate is withdrawn. In a modification the spiked plate is curved and clamped on a roller. It is stated that crushed glass may be incorporated in the tarmacadam mix to increase light reflection around the hole wall. The pierced tarmacadam surface may comprise a road parking area or footpath and is stated also to be suitable for soil stabilisation around reservoirs and for assisting the growing of grass in desert areas.
