Abstract
1376018 A firing control system THOMSONBRANDT 14 Feb 1972 [17 Feb 1971] 6830/72 Addition to 1164107 Heading F3C A firing-control system for non-guided projectiles comprising an array of tubular projectile launchers clustered about a main axis, tracking means for ascertaining the location of a target, computing means responsive to the tracking means for calculating the aim-off angle for the launchers and driving means controlled by the computing means and operatively coupled with the array for maintaining the axis trained along the aim-off angle. The array is divided into a plurality of groups of launchers, the launchers of each group being trained on the same area of space which area is different from the area on which any other group of launchers is trained. Preferably the launchers are fired in pairs, the launchers of each pair coming from different groups and being diametrically opposed to each other with respect to the main axis. Triggering means may be provided which are automatically actuated by the computing means during a predetermined firing period. The tracking means comprises a tracking radar 2 controlled by a computer 1, input signals determining the azimuthal sweep and the speed of azimuthal rotation of the aerial 3 of the radar and the target range d within which interception is to take place being fed manually into the computer. The computer 1 feeds a position extrapolator 5 which pre-calculates the aim-off angle, a range plotter 6 which determines when the target is within the firing range, and an area projector 7 which establishes the probable error in the aim-off angle. The output of the extrapolator 5 controls a tracking drive 8 of the gun 13 and the range plotter 6 a trigger stage 9. The area projector 7 controls the operation of a group selector 10 which selects the launchers to be fired in view of the error established by the area projector 7. Outputs from the group selector 10 and trigger stage 9 control a firing stage 11. Several examples of the groupings of the launchers are disclosed together with salvo firing data and the area in space covered by projectiles from the groupings (Figs. 3 to 7 and 10 to 19, not shown). Adjacent launchers may diverge from each other.
