Abstract

1376008 Floor cleaning machines R G DIXON & CO Ltd 7 Sept 1973 [12 Sept 1972] 42345/72 Heading A4F [Also in Divisions B7 and H2] A floor treating machine comprises a pair of independently movable manually operable control members 25 each operably connected to an individual electrical component 18 forming part of one of the two independent speed controls of a pair of driving wheels 14, and synchronized movement of the control members 25 adjusts the wheel speeds equally whereas differential movement provides a steering effect. In the illustrated embodiment each component 18 is a potentiometer controlling the speed of a motor 15 driving a wheel 14, each potentiometer 18 being adjustable by rotation of a pinion 23 Fig. 1 (not shown), by a gear sector (23a) carried by a control member 25. A transverse member 22 connects the members 25 to a handle 19, which when fitted about a pivot 21 without horizontal swivelling varies the two motor speeds identically, but which when swivelled horizontally adjusts the potentiometers 18, and thereby the motor speeds, differentially to produce a steering effect. On release of the handle 19 it is returned by springs 24 to an off position in which the motors are braked electro-magnetically, and from which pulling of the handle 19 actuates motor reversing switches, the motors then running at a constant speed controlled by fixed resistors 35. The potentiometers 18 control the motor currents directly, but in a modification potentiometers 18a, Fig. 4, having rectilinearly movable sliders 42 control the motor currents via amplifying circuits. Each slider 42 controls reversing switches FR, of which either the contacts F or the contacts R are engaged for forward or reverse movement when the slider engages a respective half of the potentiometer. Thus in either forward or reverse running a signal from a slider 42 is applied to a motor armature 44 via an amplifier 47, whilst a constant voltage is applied to the motor field winding 43. The motor speed is maintained constant for any setting of the slider 42 by applying to amplifiers 47, 48 a signal from an amplifier 55 responsive to variation in the back EMF generated in the armature 44, the amplifier 47 being effective to increase the motor current when the motor speed is low, and the amplifier 48 applying dynamic braking when the motor speed is too high.
