Abstract
1,131,422. Control of D.C. motors. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. 12 Jan., 1966 [19 Feb., 1965], No. 7245/65. Heading H2J. Dynamic braking of a motor 3, 4, e.g. in a battery-powered vehicle, is controlled by variation of the mark/space ratio of a " chopper " 7 from which the field at least is supplied. The ratio is adjusted in response to pedalcontrolled and armature current signals 13, 6 so as to limit the armature current to a value which depends on pedal position. In Fig. 1 braking is effected in a series motor by reversing the connections at 5 to the armature 3, which is shunted by a resistor 9 and diode 10. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the field only is energized during braking, which is either rheostatic or regenerative in this ease. The armature voltage may be sensed to prevent energization of the field with the vehicle stationary. None of the circuit elements are described.
