Abstract

1376002 Arc furnaces M P SCHLIENGER 2 Nov 1971 50986/71 Heading H5H In an arc furnace employing a non-consumable rotary electrode wheel 28 to heat the melt 20 in a crucible 17, the electrode wheel is mounted on a shaft 29 rotatable in a sleeve 30 which is so mounted in the casing 15 that it can pivot relative to the crucible 17 and be extended relative to the crucible. This permits the electrode wheel 28 to be moved over the surface 21 of the melt, to be removed from proximity with the melt, or to be moved to one side as shown in dotted lines, to heat the melt during pouring. A consumable electrode 41 may also be provided. The furnace may be evacuated by a pump 16.
