Abstract

1375769 Touch responsive switching systems A F KAY 6 Sept 1972 [27 Sept 1971] 41331/72 Heading GIN [Also in Divisions H2 and H3] A remote control arrangement for a switching device 41 of the type which makes and breaks on successive actuations, e.g. a ratchet switch, comprises an electronic switch (e.g. triac 30) in series therewith across an A.C. supply and controlled by a relatively low voltage circuit which in response to a remote switch 18 provides a single pulse sufficient to energize the electronic switch during one half-cycle of the supply only. In Fig. 1, the low voltage for the control circuit is provided by a transformer T-1 and the operation of switch 18, which may be in a touch plate, causes a capacitor 20 to charge to produce a short pulse for triggering switch 30. The triac goes off at the end of the half cycle and does not re-operate unless switch 18 is first opened to allow the capacitor 20 to discharge, and then re-operate. In Fig. 5, the low voltage is provided across a Zener diode 31 and is a substantially rectangular wave. This is differentiated by a capacitor 42 when switch 44 is made, so that the transistor conducts, discharging a capacitor 52 into the gate of the triac. The latter ceases to conduct at the end of the cycle and the time constant of the differentiator is such that T3 is maintained conductive so long as 34 is made and the triac does not re-trigger. The triggering pulse occurs close to the zero-crossing of the supply. The circuit is suitable for switching a domestic light, the restriction of the operating current to half a cycle minimizing the heating of the ratchet switch coil.
