Abstract

1375549 Mercaptan containing polyurethanes CIBA-GEIGY AG 10 Nov 1971 [10 Dec 1970] 58787/70 Heading C3R [Also in Division D1] A polyurethane or polythiourethane used for treating keratinous material may have the Formula I where X is an O or an S atom, a is an integer of from 2 to 6, b is an integer of from 1-4 and R and R<SP>1</SP> are organic groups linked through their carbon atoms to the indicated neighbouring groups, and may be cured with a catalyst which may be an aliphatic polyamine-epichlorohydrin or basic polyamide-epichlorohydrin resin prepared from the reaction product of diethylene triamine, dicyandiamide and dimethyl adipate with epichlorohydrin. Alternatively the catalyst may be a monoethanolamine optionally together with monoethanolamine sesquisulphite; diethylenetriamine; copper sulphate; copper napthenate; a dithiocarbamate; an alkyl xanthogen disulphide; of a thiuram sulphide. The polyurethanes or polythiourethanes may be used together with a liquid epoxy resin prepared from 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane and epichlorohydrin, and may be applied as aqueous dispersions or emulsions or from organic solvents, e.g. alcohols, ketones, benzene and halogenated hydrocarbons. Curing may be accelerated by heating (30-180‹ C.) and high humidity. The polyurethane may be prepared by reaction of a mercapto alcohol with a polyisocyanate, each of which may be monomeric or polymeric. The polythiourethanes may be adducts of a monomeric or polymeric polymercaptan with a polyisocyanate. The mercaptoalcohols and polymercaptans may contain ester and/or poly(oxyalkylene) groups. The polyisocyanate may be an aromatic, cycloaliphatic or aliphatic di-isocyanate, or a urethane prepolymer which may contain polyester or poly- (oxyalkylene) units.
