Abstract
1375476 Dry - scrubbing fluoride fumes ARDAL OG SUNNDAL VERK AS 21 July 1972 [22 July 1971] 34143/72 Headings B1L and BIT [Also in Division Cl] Flouride- and sulphur-containing fumes from aluminium electrolytic cells are filtered and dry-scrubbed for selective removal of fluoride. Alumina is added to the fumes for reaction with fluorides present and is then removed by filtration in one or more filter units, the alumina being added not more than one metre upstream of the filter units or in each filter unit itself such as to give a contact time which means that fluoride is selectively absorbed. The alumina used contains a low content of alpha crystals and is reactive to fluoride. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 a number of bag filters 7 are mounted in a housing with fumes inlet 6 and filter fumes outlet 10. Alumina is dispensed from tubes 8 and falls in counter-current to the fumes. An outlet 9 is provided for the alumina.
