A 1st drum of rollers 2 rotates beneath the pile, the rollers 2 being geared so that they rotate in the direction opposite to that of the drum. Suction rollers 13 are formed into a second drum with its axis of rotation displaced with respect to that of the first drum. As the two drums rotate the rollers 2 and 13 mesh alternately. The suction rollers rotate in a direction opposite to that of the drums, thereby peeling off the bottom sheet of the pile 39. The hopper 27 is made up of a series of fingers which pass between the rollers of the rollerway 29 to deposit a counted batch of sheets on to the rollerway. The separating apparatus forms part of batching apparatus (Fig. 1). Piles of sheets delivered to the apparatus arrive along the rollerway where they are stopped and their presence detected by a sensor (34). If the hopper 9 requires replenishment, detected by a sensor (38) sensing the top of the pile, a conveyer-lift removes the pile from the rollerway and transports it to the hopper 9. The conveyer-lift comprises a plurality of fingers with rollers (37) attached to an endless chain (30).
