Abstract

1375097 Strengthening glass-ceramics OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 7 Feb 1972 [8 Feb 1971] 5505/72 Heading C1M A glass-ceramic article having a modulus of rupture of over 85,000 p.s.i. is obtained by contacting the surface of a lithium-containing glass ceramic at an elevated temperature with an ion-exchange material containing alkali metals having a larger ionic radius than the lithium ions. The glass ceramic comprises in percentage by weight SiO 2 60-75; Al 2 O 3 15-30; Si 2 O 3-5À5; F 2 0À2-0À8; Na 2 O+K 2 O 0-2; and TiO 2 +ZrO 2 2À5-10 wherein TiO 2 and ZrO 2 are present together and wherein the molar ratio R 2 O+RO : Al 2 O 3 is 0À95 to 0À5 where R 2 O is the total alkali metal oxide content and RO the total content of alkaline earth metal oxides plus zinc oxide. The glass ceramic is prepared by heating a thermally crystallizable glass at a temperature of 1800‹ to 2200‹ F. The ionexchange is carried out at a temperature of from 750‹ to 1000‹ F. for a period of ¢ to 8 hours. The ion-exchange material is preferably a molten salt such as sodium or potassium nitrate.
