1374999 Hopper wagons C L WINSLOW Jnr 2 Nov 1971 50924/71 Heading B7L [Also in Division B8] A railway car hopper comprises spaced rollers 84 (joined by links (88), Fig. 6 (not shown), extending between fixed support tracks 72 at opposite sides of a discharge opening 54, a flexible closure member 80 having an upper portion, in contact with the rollers 84 and a spaced lower portion these portions being interconnected at their ends and receiving the rollers 84 therebetween, the upper portion acting to close the discharge opening 54 and having a point 86a fixed against movement at one end of the opening 54, and means 100 to move the rollers 84 across the opening 54 to simultaneously operate the flexible closure member 80. The closure member 80 may be an endless belt, as shown, or may be an elongate piece of flexible material with its opposite ends separately secured in the region of the point 86a. In the form illustrated, the operating means 100 is pneumatic and moves the rollers 84 in a direction oblique to the plane of the opening 54, but alternative motive means may be used and the rollers may be moved in a direction parallel to the plane of the opening. In a further form, the rollers and closure member are operated by engagement of a protruding means (192), Figs. 19-12 (not shown), carried by the closure member 80, with an actuating member (202) disposed adjacent the track along which the railway car moves. A second discharge opening 56 may be provided, having a similar set of rollers 84 and flexible closure member 82.
