Abstract
1374915 Making lock nuts; welding by fusion M HATTAN W P GREEN and A H GOERING 1 March 1972 [8 March 1971] 9435/72 Headings B3A and B3R [Also in Division F2] A nut 10 is formed by locating within a casing 12 a helical metal coil 13 shaped internally to form a screw thread and being in a workhardened condition, and welding the radially outer portion of the coil to the casing 12 by locally heating said outer portion to a temperature locally adversely affecting the workhardened condition of the coil outer portion, while maintaining the radially inner portion of the coil at a temperature low enough to avoid destroying said work-hardened condition. The coil 13 is formed by drawing a circular wire 20 through a forming machine 21 to produce the cross-section shown and to work-harden the wire, and forcing the wire against a die 23, the wire being sheared by a cutter 24 after 5“ turns have been formed. The coil 13 and an end bush 14 are placed in the casing 12 and the assembly clamped between plates 41, 42, a packing washer 53 and a spring washer 55 under the plate 41 ensuring that the casing 12 and coil 13 are pressed firmly against the bush 14. A copper or aluminium mandrel 45 is screwed into the coil 13 to provide a heat sink during welding. Laser or electron beam welding, using a gun 56, heats a tapering zone (shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1) to weld the coil and the bush to the casing 12, and to weld adjacent turns of the coil 13 together at their radially outer portions. The upper coil 13<SP>1</SP> is not welded. After welding the nut is removed from the tool 40 and is deformed radially inwardly at two diametrically opposite points adjacent its upper surface 18 by forging dies 59 to make the nut self-locking (Fig. 6). Finally the nut is heat treated at a temperature high enough to harden the casing 12, coil 13, and bush 14 without destroying the work-hardening of the thread portion of the coil. The casing may be of martenitic stainless steel and the coil may be of semi-austenitic stainless steel, both parts, except for the welded periphery of the coil, will in the completed nut be in heat hardened martensitic condition.
